Record Store Report #1

So, I've been wanting to do some kind of post of some form on physical music pickups. As some of you may know, I collect an insane amount of physical media (especially music and video games). This will be a periodic series where I updated music that I've picked up since the last post. Considering that I don't have posts prior to this, I can go back forever, but I actually remember quite a ways back (roughly around one year ago), so we'll go from that date to whenever I last picked up physical music (I think it was the last time TRVSHBXVT and I hung out in SF). Also, despite the name of this series, it will also include internet purchases, gifts, pick-ups from non-record stores, and so on.

Additionally, I haven't actually listened to everything yet, my backlog is insane, I'll get to it, eventually. Also not included here: stuff I happened to miss on accident (which I think there is a few), my own music, TV releases, and these like 20 Middle Eastern tapes that I got from a thrift store recently -- I haven't processed them yet, and honestly doubt most are even on Discogs/RYM (especially considering there's many which look to be home-dubbed). I may or not include these in the next post. I'll also include a bit of info and such, both from databases and my own thoughts. I am using images from databases here, it would take too long to take photos of everything. These may or may not be in any kind of coherent order, but I will sort media types. For RYM genres, (P) equals "primary", (S) equals "secondary".

CASSETTE TAPES:

All of this batch were either purchased online (direct from the labels/artists), or gifted to me.

Artist: Ennnn
Title: 大射精 Black Label
Discogs Genres: Breakcore, Gabber, Jungle, Hardcore, J-Core
RYM Genres: (P) Breakcore, Lolicore (S) Hardtek, Lolicore, Darkside

I haven't actually been able to play this yet since my walkman randomly broke and my home decks aren't set up at the moment, but man am I excited to have this, especially since I missed out on its sister release. Ennnn is amazing, insane Japanese lolicore.

Artist: Princess Army Wedding Combat
Title: Star Leaf
Discogs Genres: Noise, Noisecore, Breakcore, Harsh Noise Wall
RYM Genres: (P) Harsh Noise, Breakcore (S) Harsh Noise Wall, Power Noise

Again, haven't been able to play tapes lately, but so stoked PAWC sent me a copy of this, and it comes in a black velvet bag, really nice! PAWC is an absolute legend in the otaku music community, and is very well deserved, they still have some copies for sale on their Bandcamp, highly recommend checking that out~!

Artist: J.PORT / D.LUND
Title: C90 Split
Discogs Genres: Noise
RYM Genres: N/A

This is baffling to me, J.PORT is a seemingly new project of one of the LOLI RIPE members, yes, LOLI RIPE!!!! Despite LOLI RIPE dropping a tape and new music, nobody gave a fuck and it totally flew under the radar, but this is historical. There was some lore with this album too, seems they've actually still been active this whole time (I'm making some assumptions here though), and some background on them in Sweden's underground music scene. Really fascinating history and lore, I hope we get more new material.

Artist: goreshit
Title: dancefloor degrader / dancefloor muthafucka! / mainstream muthafucka!
Discogs Genres: Gabber, Breakcore, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Freeform Hardcore, Mashcore, Lolicore (S) Happy Hardcore, Eurodance, Nightcore, Lolicore, Gabber

Awesome re-issue of two absolutely classic releases, especially the astoundingly good dancefloor degrader (I even have a bootleg patch of it I got manufactured on my [still in progress] battle jacket!). Classic lolicore/dancecore goodness, also the actual color of these tapes are beautiful, I love it when care is put into the visual appeal of physicals.

CDs:

This first batch, if I recall correctly, is when schoolbook_depository and TRVSHBXVT both visited me almost exactly one year ago. We went to the Amoeba in SF, and I picked up some CDs whilst there.

Artist: Ryoji Ikeda
Title: +/-
Discogs Genres: Minimal, Experimental, Drone, Ambient, Glitch
RYM Genres: (P) Micromontage, Glitch (S) Drone, Onkyo, Indeterminacy

Not the original, but the 2000 re-issue, either way though, Ryoji Ikeda is an amazing and pioneering figure in the 90s and 00s glitch scene (and they're still active to this day). I'm sure I've heard this album ages ago, but have yet to actually put my copy on. Also, this is one of the rare cases they use red, usually their covers are monochrome or use accents of blue.

Artist: Negativland
Title: True False
Discogs Genres: Sound Collage, Musique Concrète, IDM, Glitch, Noise, Industrial
RYM Genres: (P) Plunderphonics, Sound Collage (S) Spoken Word, Satire, Minimal Wave

I often listen to the sister album, The World Will Decide, more than this one, but True False is great too. Negativland are actually local to me, and are really influential and important in plunderphonics. Their stuff tends to be politically charged and against industries and stuff, with both this and its sister largely calling out the tech industry, invasion of privacy, and so on -- is also quite dystopian as well (as one can tell from the album art). Great stuff, def go check em out if you haven't.

Artist: Squarepusher
Title: Port Rhombus EP
Discogs Genres: Drum n Bass, Jungle, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Drill and Bass, Drum and Bass (S) Jungle, IDM, Jazzstep

Squarepusher really needs no introduction, really excellent artist. This EP is really amazing, and also Lost Frog loves this one too, so it's heavily recommended by two labelheads. Go listen to it if you haven't already, kicks ass.

Artist: Dumb Type
Title: [OR]
Discogs Genres: Abstract, Minimal
RYM Genres: (P) Experimental, Electronic (S) Sound Collage, Micromontage, Ambient, MIDI Music

Dumb Type is the lesser known group of Ryoji Ikeda that's been active since the 80s. I have some of their other stuff and is all very cool and interesting. I've heard a bit of this album but have yet to play my copy all the way through.

Artist: Mariya Takeuchi
Title: Denim
Discogs Genres: Kayōkyoku, Soft Rock, Ballad, Pop Rock, City Pop
RYM Genres: N/A

Most famous for some hit singles that later got an insane new following, they make a lot of awesome stuff. I bought a decent amount of vinyl of them way before they blew up so they costed next to nothing, was crazy to see those records get marked up by like, 400% -- seems the market has went down a bit since then. Anyways, I haven't listened to this CD yet, but I love her 70s and 80s stuff.

Artist: Taylor Deupree + Richard Chartier
Title: SPEC.
Discogs Genres: Minimal, Glitch, Lowercase
RYM Genres: (P) Glitch, Micromontage (S) Lowercase

Was a bit hesitant to buy this, because I was confusing it with 0/r's 0/r, which I've accidentally bought twice, but happy I got this since I did in fact, not already own a copy of it. I still have to check out more of Taylor Deupree's solo works, but I love Richard Chartier's outputs, and they were my first introduction to lowercase music, really cool stuff.

Artist: Doormouse
Title: The Method Volume One: The Streets Of Miami / Freaked Out Mess
Discogs Genres: Breaks, Gabber, Breakcore
RYM Genres: N/A

Although a bit of a Facebook boomer now, Doormouse's importance in the story of American breakcore cannot be understated, they've done a lot of spearheading for the genre since the earliest days. This double-CD is a DJ mix and a re-issue of Freaked Out Mess. Awesome find, and always look through clearance people, you'll find great stuff.

Artist: Ulrich Schnauss & Jonas Munk
Title: Passage
Discogs Genres: Ambient
RYM Genres: (P) Progressive Electronic (S) New Age, Berlin School, Downtempo, Dream Pop

I absolutely love Ulrich Schnauss, been listening to them for absolute ages, with 2001's Far Away Trains Passing By being one of my favorite albums in middle school, and A Long Way To Fall being one of my favorite downtempo albums, period. I love their collaborative albums too, especially the ones with Mark Peters. Somehow this one slipped past me though, but happy to have picked up a copy.

Second batch, this was a small visit to the Amoeba in Berkeley. I was feeling stressed and just needed to get out of the house, we somehow ended up at the record store so picked some items up.

Artist: Francisco López
Title: Untitled (1993)
Discogs Genres: Dark Ambient, Drone, Minimal
RYM Genres: Drone, Musique concrète

Collection of live pieces featuring other artists. Francisco López is from the lowercase and minimal scene who has an insane output, Discogs currently lists 159 albums from them, absolutely insane. If you're into artists like Richard Chartier (featured in this list above), then you'll likely also dig this.

Artist: Eat Static
Title: Epsylon
Discogs Genres: Trance, Goa Trance, Drum n Bass
RYM Genres: (P) Trance, Psytrance (S) Progressive Psytrance, Drum and Bass, Progressive Electronic

Legendary goa/psy trance group, amazing quality stuff. I love all of their music, and their whole universe (like Ozric Tentacles absolutely slays). If you're looking for some classic dance music, this is a great place to go.

Artist: Muslimgauze
Title: Veiled Sisters
Discogs Genres: Ambient, Dub
RYM Genres: (P) Tribal Ambient, Ambient Techno (S) Arabic Music, Sound Collage, Ambient Dub, Downtempo, Drone

Major shout out to my Mom for buying me this one, as I really wanted it but was going to pass due to the price. Anyways, I FUCKING LOVE MUSLIMGAUZE. All of their styles are 10/10, and that includes their more melodic style. This is one of my favorite albums by them ever, so happy to finally have a physical copy of it. Seriously, go give this a listen if you haven't.

Artist: Mystic Fugu Orchestra
Title: Zohar
Discogs Genres: Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Jewish Music (S) Free Improvisation, Lowercase, Tape Music

Collaborative project between John Zorn and Yamantaka/Yamatsuka Eye (Hanatarash, Boredoms). They've worked together many times, but this is an insanely lo-fi and unconventional album from the both of them. Cool stuff though, I dig the experimentation.

Artist: Keiji Haino
Title: わたしだけ?
Discogs Genres: Avantgarde, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Free Improvisation (S) Noise, Avant-Folk, Singer-Songwriter

KEIJI HAINO FUCK YES. I absolutely love this guy, but their stuff is so hard to find in record stores (my preferred method of buying music), and usually costs a ton, but man, Keiji Haino is insanely good. Probably one of the most "out there" artists in the classic Japanese noise scene, being heavily influenced by blues, psyche rock, and folk music, they bring a whole entire different bed of sounds to the table. They've been active since the 70s, but this is their debut album from 1981.

This next batch is from my birthday in 2024. We took a trip down to LA for the weekend, so of course I had to go the Amoeba down there. I still prefer the San Francisco one, but this was a lot of fun, and totally would visit again if I ever re-visit the area. I think there's some CDs missing here though, stuff that wasn't on Discogs.

Artist: Hiroshi Yoshimura
Title: Surround
Discogs Genres: New Age, Ambient
RYM Genres: (P) Ambient, New Age

I love all that classic (and not so classic) Japanese new age stuff, it's all incredibly calming, amazing produced, and I love the old soundfonts. This album/artist is no different, really phenomenal stuff. All of their music is really good, totally check them out.

Artist: Plastikman
Title: EX
Discogs Genres: Techno, Minimal, Acid
RYM Genres: (P) Minimal Techno (S) Acid Techno, Dub Techno

I really gotta listen to more Plastikman, especially since I love a lot of the older Richie Hawtin material. Cool techno stuff, and I love that it looks like XBOX or Monster Energy, is cool.

Arist: Bogdan Raczynski
Title: Alright!
Discogs Genres: Breakcore, IDM, Hardcore, Acid, Drum n Bass, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Drill and Bass, IDM, Breakcore

Always saw this as their "happy hardcore" album, so I disagree with these genre tags, but whatever. This isn't part of their classic material but is absolutely stellar and I love it. Bogdan is insanely creative and their music is amazing, please listen to them, now. Also some depressing Himeko lore, before I knew of their music the record store had all of their classic material for dirt cheap, I thought the artworks were cool, took note of it, looked it up when I got home, absolutely blew my mind, raced back to the record store, they were all gone already.

Artist: Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement
Title: Killer Whale Atmospheres
Discogs Genres: Dub Techno, Dark Ambient
RYM Genres: (P) Ambient Dub, Ambient Techno (S) Dub Techno, Tribal Ambient, Nature Recordings, Dark Ambient

RSE is a side project of an artist better known as Prurient and Vatican Shadow. I love all of their music, and the RSE material is consistently a really interesting take on tribal ambient and dub techno. It usually has themes of South American jungles and deforestation and stuff, so whatever caused them to make an album themed on WHALES of all things is beyond me, but it's a good album.

Artist: Zu & Nobukazu Takemura
Title: Identification With The Enemy: A Key To The Underworld
Discogs Genres: Rhythmic Noise, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Avant-Prog, Avant-Garde Jazz, Experimental Rock (S) Math Rock

Of course this is online now, but this was always an item of massive curiousity for many years for me. I've still yet to give it a full listen, but it's so unconvential and baffling from Nobukazu Takemura -- a rock album, and with a cover art like that? Seriously, it's so weird to me that this exists. Now that said, Nobukazu Takemura is one of my favorite artists ever, I have a ton of their stuff in physical media. Their discography is eclectic, but go dig though it.

Artist: The Future Sound Of London
Title: Cascade
Discogs Genres: Breakbeat, IDM, Ambient
RYM Genres: (P) Ambient Techno, Ambient, Chillout (S) IDM, Tribal Ambient, Progressive Breaks, Ambient Trance, Psybient

Old electronica that basically defies genre classification, they put out some stellar albums in the 90s (one of which is referenced/sampled in Wake Me Up When Breakcore Ends). I've heard the classic albums, but haven't fully explored all the singles and EPs and stuff yet, still gotta put this one on.

Artist: Aphex Twin
Title: Collapse EP
Discogs Genres: IDM
RYM Genres: (P) IDM (S) Footwork, Drill and Bass, Acid Techno, Ambient Techno, Acid Breaks

Finally after years got a copy of this insanely good EP. I love Aphex Twin, both the old stuff and the new, everything they do is stellar. I really love the Collapse EP, and hearing them explore more modern styles and stuff, and every track is insane, some of my favorite material of "modern AFX". I really hope that we get more material like this one day.

Artist: Four Tet
Title: New Energy
Discogs Genres: Ambient, House, Techno, Minimal, IDM, Future Jazz
RYM Genres: (P) Microhouse, Ambient House (S) Downtempo, Folktronica, IDM, Organic House, Post-Dubstep

Another CD I kept meaning to get and never did, finally acquired. Four Tet is one of the artists that initially got me into electronica, all the way back when I was a kid. Their music is insanely good, both the old era and the new era. Always stellar.

Artist: Four Tet
Title: Three
Discogs Genres: Deep House, Experimental, Ambient, Downtempo
RYM Genres: (P) Downtempo (S) Microhouse, Ambient, Folktronica

The (at time of writing) newest Four Tet album, absolutely had to pick this up. I've listened to it a few times, great stuff, I especially love the track Skater on this album.

Artist: Squarepusher
Title: Dostrotime
Discogs Genres: Drum n Bass, IDM, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Drill and Bass (S) Breakcore, Acidcore, Contemporary Folk

Yes, also got the new Squarepusher back then too, I listened to it once or twice, but really need to revisit it. I absolutely love Squarepusher, and how they're still quite active after all these years. Absolutely groundbreaking and pioneering artist, always does awesome stuff.

Artist: Prefuse 73
Title: Rivington Não Rio
Discogs Genres: Downtempo, Leftfield
RYM Genres: (P) Glitch Hop, Glitch Pop (S) Experimental Hip Hop

If you're new to them, check out their classic material first, but this stuff is cool too. Prefuse 73 is an iconic glitch-hop artist with a really stellar sound. I haven't played my actual CD of this yet though, and I haven't listened to it in years, so certainly gotta revisit it. Also, marks the end of this section, but I do think I got more CDs, just my versions aren't on Discogs (which is where I'm pulling this information from).

This last CD, not sure when I picked it up, got at a local thriftstore.

Artist: Deep Forest
Album:  Deep Forest
Discogs Genres: Tribal, Downtempo, Ambient
RYM Genres: (P) Downtempo (S) New Age, Tribal Ambient, Ambient House, Breakbeat, African Folk Music
For unknown reasons my formatting broke here, anyways, picked this up for like $1, stellar find. This is a classic childhood album for me, one of the things that got me into electronic music at an incredibly young age. Beautiful stuff, highly recommended!

VINYL:

So last Christmas I got a new record player to replace my old one that stopped working. Of course I immediately went to the record store and bought some new records! These were purchased at the Amoeba in Berkeley.

Artist: Chungking Mansions
Title: Makahala
Discogs Genres: Experimental
RYM Genres: Hardvapour, Industrial Techno

Normally vaporwave vinyl cost a ton of money, but hardvapour was such an epic failure that I picked this up for like $4. Clear vinyl too, looks cool. I honestly have mixed feelings on the hardvapour genre, but this release is good and was so cheap I couldn't pass it up.

Artist: Chris Liberator & Darc Marc
Title: Orangey 21
Discogs Genres: Techno, Acid
RYM Genres: N/A

I love acid techno, and I was hoping to find some stuff like this there, and they had a bunch! They actually had way more than I could buy, but picked up a decent amount. That said, acid techno kind of all blurs together if you didn't just recently listen to it, so not a ton to write about for these entries.

Artist: Ant, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Rackitt & The Geezer
Title: Ain't No Stopping This Remixes
Discogs Genres: Techno
RYM Genres: N/A

Cool stuff, but I listened to these all back to back over half a year ago, so hard to remember details.

Artist: Geezer
Title: Acidextrous / Suspect Package
Discogs Genres: Acid, Techno
RYM Genres: Acid Techno

Geezer is awesome, stellar stuff, go check em out if you enjoy acid techno.

Artist: Ant, Chris Liberator, K.N. & DJ Cunt
Title: Steel Dragon
Discogs Genres: Techno
RYM Genres: N/A

DJ Cunt's name makes me laugh, great music though.

Artist: Bochum Welt
Title: Module 2
Discogs Genres: IDM, Electro
RYM Genres: (P) IDM, Ambient Techno, Electro (S) Minimal Techno

Bochum Welt is one of my favorite braindance artists to ever do it, absolutely warm and fuzzy music, is amazing. This is the 2024 green vinyl re-issue, but the music itself orginally released in the 90s. Really phenomenal stuff, I can't get enough of this kind of thing.

Artist: DJ Rashad
Title: Double Cup
Discogs Genres: Juke, Footwork, Ghetto House
RYM Genres: (P) Footwork (S) Ghettotech, Trap, Juke

One of the best footwork/juke artists EVER. I absolutely had to get the double LP re-issue on GOLD vinyl, super cool, and so happy to finally have this iconic album on a physical format. RIP DJ Rashad, your music is some of the best.

Artist: Mama Baer
Title: Asylum Lunaticum
Discogs Genres: Noise, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Experimental

Solo-work of Mama Bär, who usually collabs with husband Kommissar Hjuler. As expected, really odd-ball experimental music.

The last batch of this post, a record store trip in San Francisco with TRVSHBXVT, picked up a few records whilst there. Weirdly everything that day that I found was expensive though, so could only get a few, but got some crazy stuff.

Artist: Keiji Haino
Title: わたしだけ?
Discogs Genres: Noise, Avantgarde, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) Free Improvisation (S) Noise, Avant-Folk, Singer-Songwriter

Yes, this again, I love this album so much that I double-dipped and also picked it up on vinyl. This is a re-issue, but still stellar to have it.

Artist: Normal Brain
Title: Lady Maid
Discogs Genres: Minimal, Experimental, Ambient, Avantgarde
RYM Genres: (P) Minimal Wave, Minimal Synth (S) Ambient, Dark Ambient, Industrial

Experimental early 80s electronica from Japan. An original copy costs hundreds so this is a re-issue, but is awesome that this even got issued again, really cool stuff. Also, I'm a huge fan of 80s Japanese -wave and synth music, so is cool to own more of it.

Artist: t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者
Title: アンタラ通信
Discogs Genres: Ambient, Experimental, Vaporwave
RYM Genres: (P) Ambient, Slushwave (S) Mallsoft, New Age, Drone, Dreampunk

AAAAAAA -- such a crazy find, one of the two biggest finds of the day (the last entry will shock you!). Telepath is my all-time favorite vaporwave artist, so I absolutely had to get this, it's on marbled white vinyl too. So psyched still to actually own physical Telepath music.

Artist: Kid Spatula
Title: Spatula Freak
Discogs Genres: IDM, Experimental
RYM Genres: (P) IDM (S) Ambient Techno

THE FIND OF THE DAY FOR SURE. Those who already know me well know this already, but for those who don't, Mu-Ziq is one of my all-time absolutely favorite artists ever. I even did an entire Mu-Ziq only DJ set years ago. Their music is just PERFECT IDM, the ultimate. So this is one of their aliases, and the insane part? This is unopened stock from 1995!!!! It's as old as me and still hasn't even been opened, let alone played, absolutely insane. I haven't had the guts to even open this one yet.

And with that, that's most of what I've picked up over the past like, 13 months? I 100% think some CDs are missing, but that should be most of it (not including the Middle Eastern thriftstore tapes that I mentioned earlier in this post). Anyways, thanks for checking this out/reading, no idea when I'll do another post like this, could be sometime, but stay tuned.

Lolita Catacombs Retvrns (Well, Hopefully) + Summer Ov Passion

Hey y'all, as you may have noticed, my label TSUNDERE VIOLENCE, recently returned, I also went back to releasing music myself (kicking things off with a new drum'n'bass album on unlucky wind). Since I'm back in the public sphere, thought I should maybe actually try to revive this blog -- what I've been doing, music updates, upcoming/ongoing projects, TV news, and so on.

First, this Summer has been insane for me, I don't know what got into me, but I've been more creative and productive than I have been in many years. I've been making music near daily all Summer, oftentimes multiple tracks a day, day-in-and-day-out, from dawn to late in the night. It's been a ton of fun -- it also completely backed up the TV queue though. Scheduled releases are currently planned out into August of 2027 (yes, 2027) -- and that's with leaving a few things out to add in later. That said, things are spread out and constantly re-arranged, some of the new stuff that I've been completing lately will release this year, some in 2026, some in 2027. Most of these releases have planned physicals (currently Pro-CDrs and cassette tapes), but EPs and things that are absurdly long will remain digital only.

For those who didn't see my posts about it, I'll basically be releasing at least one thing from my archives a month, with a few bonuses scattered throughout. TSUNDERE VIOLENCE releases will occur on the 13th of every month, with again, some bonuses here and there scattered around throughout the upcoming years.

Now, here comes the tricky part, I want to discuss what I've been working on these past few months, but somehow without spoiling upcoming releases/surprises -- though I do plan to make posts for each release that comes out with some added details/background/lore/inspirations/and so on. These new projects will begin releasing in September (August's drop is an old lolicore split that never released for unknown reasons). Also, well, hopefully in September, using a different production plant for that release as I'm very dead-set on digipak cases for that album (it will make sense later), and they've seemingly been in production limbo all week, here's to hoping they get manufactured and arrive on time.

So, as for what the music actually is, without giving too much away, a consistent focus of mine lately has been music of the past -- revisiting the sounds and styles of other eras, spanning from the 1990s to the early 2010s. I seriously got into music in the 00s (it's when I started making my own music as well), so it's been a blast trying to re-create 00s styled music, same with 90s, and of course early 2010s as well. There's a lot of releases in this ongoing "saga", they're being spread out over quite a few months, but I'm really excited to share them with you all and to talk about them further when they release.

Additionally, I've been revisiting a lot of old projects and ideas, some old aliases of mine that haven't had a release in quite sometime are being revived, or being entirely re-worked from the ground up (aka, the old project is killed forever, but a new and improved project takes its place). There's a lot of insane stuff I have lined up for everyone -- all kinds of -core music, but a lot of stuff that I honestly doubt majority of the modern community will even expect to see released.

I've also been genre-hopping hardcore, most of the upcoming music is various forms of electronica, but I also started a new Vocaloid project using Yuki Kaai -- there's already two albums fully produced of this new project. I've been exploring a lot of different techniques and tools in my music as well; digital and analogue manipulations, revisiting old techniques, developing new techniques, and so on -- there really is just too much to talk about in a single post, so that's why I'll do individual posts as releases come out.

Also, just want to say, despite me making music under many different names again, I still have a bunch of new Himeko material coming out (both fully completed and almost completed), so stay tuned for that (if everything goes to plan, future Himeko Katagiri releases planned for this year are August, October, and December -- but again, this is subject to change based on will or production delays/issues -- I try to produce physical copies a few months in advance, but life is unpredictable).

I'll leave this post at that for now, more updates/posts hopefully coming soon (both as releases drop and secrets become revealed). Thank you all for the continued support, God Bless.

RE: Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

Well, it's finally here, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct~! I've been patiently awaiting this for months now, and was quite exciting to see. Although I didn't watch it live, I did wake up right after it finished airing and watched the recording immediately. I don't get many opportunities to talk about it, but I'm an avid gamer, and I love my Switch, so Switch 2 is something that I've been very interested in. That said, I have some mixed feelings on this Direct, it showed what I wanted to see, but not enough of it. I understand they want to compete with other consoles, but Switch 1 game re-issues and games already available on other consoles don't interest me a whole lot, but they did show some stellar looking exclusives and a lot of other interesting details.

First, let's talk about the games themselves. The new Mario Kart, dubbed Mario Kart World, was definitely the main game showcase here, and wow, this game looks absolutely insane. The whole world aspect looks very interesting, and I wonder how driving to and fro between tracks will work, will it be like those classic cartoon grand prix racing specials?

Anyways, lots of bonkers stuff in the preview, like that part where they took control of a big rig, and a lot of other little details. Also that many racers looks like pure chaos, hopefully they're mindful of item drops in it, since getting blue shelled by 20 racers would be torture. This game looks amazing though, I absolutely love Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but it's a tough game to follow considering how perfect that release is, they needed to mix things up and this new game certainly looks like it will do just that. Additionally, awesome it's a day one release, I was hoping it would be a launch title. I liked the graphics too, Peach looks cute as she should, nice costumes too, and interesting free exploration and photos and stuff.

The other big game showcase was the new Donkey Kong. I used to play an old Donkey Kong game as a kid, we got it from our babysitter, haven't really touched the series since childhood but I'm all for more 3D platformers being made, and the whole go wild and destroy everything aspect is a fun looking gimmick. I know the DK redesign is controversial but I honestly couldn't care less about that.

Kirby Air Riders also looks interesting, I used to play the original in Sunday School as a kid, lots of fond memories of that game, so a long-awaited sequel is both very unexpected but also very welcome. Pretty curious about this game and what it will entail, the trailer was incredibly vague but I'm excited for it.

It's also awesome that NSO Expansion is being expanded to include the Gamecube. I played Gamecube a lot in Sunday School, but sadly never actually owned one (and never got around to buying one later in life). The line-up of planned games looks amazing, especially Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, I always really wanted that game as a kid but never played it, so I'm pretty excited for that to eventually become available to me. Also Soul Calibur II will be a blast from the past, I used to play Soul Calibur a ton on my Uncle's Dreamcast, and I was a fanatic on IV I believe, like was pro-level for a good while, so that will be fun.

Also, as I saw people joke prior to the Direct, seems they really are re-issuing games and doing dual-platform releases. I'm actually excited for Pokemon Legends ZA, I always wanted an urban Pokemon game, and it also being on the Switch 2 is excellent. I'll see about any of the other Switch 2 versions of games as they release, I certainly won't be re-buying any games though.

They teased a lot of games in the Direct, as said prior, re-issues and stuff from other platforms doesn't excite me too much, I already own a billion consoles. I also noticed that a lot of the teased third party games had stuff like "(Text Here) Edition" -- which I'm assuming is code for "not the same as the PS4/PS5 version".

They were some obvious tech demo games too, bizarrely the game that showcases the new features of the consoles is paid, seems like something that should be free (perhaps even pre-installed on the console). There was also that bizarre looking wheelchair basketball game, very unusual.

As for the tech itself, a lot of interesting stuff that I'm curious how it will be utilized in games. The main thing that stands out to me is the camera, and as shown in the Mario Party trailer, it can be utilized in games, so it seems like we're getting a spiritual sequel to when game consoles were randomly doing camera games, like the PS2 camera and all that jazz. Perhaps we'll get a re-issue of that one Cardcaptor Sakura PS2 game for the Switch (I know that would never happen, but would be funny). I do like motion controls though in games, so I'm curious how many games will implement the camera. Also curious if motion controls will be improved, Switch 1's motion controls were far lacking compared to the Wii, so I'm looking for an improvement.

While speaking on improvements, I hope the internet is better, especially with how more demanding this looks. The whole C Button, chat, live streaming, and so on, it will need much better internet to handle all of that without constantly disconnecting. So I'm hoping for better internet.

Going back to new features, the mouse is silly but interesting. As with the camera, I'm excited to see where developers take it and how it will be utilized in various games. It's certainly an interesting idea.

Also, I was weirdly really curious about how Switch 2 games will look physically, and I'm happy they showed they will be red, pretty nice and will be obviously different from Switch 1 cartridges. Now that said, I'm curious how the actual packaging will look, they're still using similar branding but they need to be mindful of consumer confusion, so I'm curious how different the cases and packaging will be (if at all).

I know they plan on showing the games more in the future, but that's my thoughts so far on the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct/current information. Now if I can actually get one is another question, took a long time for me to get Switch 1, so I'm hoping I can pick one up sooner than later. That said, getting game consoles later also means there's more games available (and cheaper used copies), so you win some you lose some.

A Peek Into The Spring 2025 Anime Season

Hey y'all, totally forgot this blog even existed. I won't make any promises of trying to be more active here, I simply don't know if I will be or not, but felt like posting here again so I shall. I mostly just want to talk about anime and stuff, more than I already do with friends, I really love anime a lot and want to talk about it more. Every season I always peruse the new anime coming out and add a boatload of them to my PTW list. I thought of doing a series of posts on this before but always forget about it, but not this season!

This is just my ramblings on some upcoming anime. This post will NOT include new seasons/movies/OVAs-of-franchises/remakes/etc -- though there are a lot of those coming out this next season too (like the Konosuba OVAs and the Maid Dragon movie -- which I do hope makes it to US theaters; I saw the Spy X Family movie in the theater and it was a lot of fun). All in all, I want to focus on new shows in these seasonal posts.

Just going to work through the Spring 2025 season top to bottom (order is meaningless outside of that), these are the shows that piqued my interest and some words about them. Also, I didn't watch any promotional materials, just going off of the MyAnimeList entries. Also, ironically it will probably be awhile til I watch these as I prefer to wait til a season has finished airing to watch it without waiting for new episodes.

As you'll see, this looks like an absolutely stacked season, added a ton of stuff to my PTW.

#1: Apocalypse Hotel
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59675/Apocalypse_Hotel

One of the main ones I'm looking forwards to. Robot girls in a hotel after humanity has died off, really interesting premise. Also hotels are an uncommon setting/theme, so I'm curious how it will play a role in the story. Looks quite interesting, certainly curious about it.

#2: Aru Majo ga Shinu Made
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59169/Aru_Majo_ga_Shinu_Made

I love witch girls, I also love emotional anime, and this new series looks like it combines the two. Witch girl who's slowly dying having to collect tears of joy to save herself, it's an interesting premise and has a lot of potential to be quite good. Also, curious how they'll combine these ideas -- witches and emotional dramas.

#3: Ballpark de Tsukamaete!
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60293/Ballpark_de_Tsukamaete

Ok, call me weird, but this is the anime of the Spring 2025 season that I'm looking forwards to the most. I love anime with odd settings and themes, and an anime focused on a concession girl at a baseball stadium most certainly fits the bill. I actually did little league baseball when I was a kid, I hated it then but now as an adult I have a weird affinity for baseball (I never watch it, but I like media based on it, like anime and video games). But(t) yeah, show looks based, cute baseball girl and interesting premise about baseball fans but not directly about the baseball itself. Reminds me of a Japanese movie I watched that was similar, was about the people in the stands and not the baseball itself, curious if this will be similar.

#4: Chotto dake Ai ga Omoi Dark Elf ga Isekai kara Oikaketekita
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59745/Chotto_dake_Ai_ga_Omoi_Dark_Elf_ga_Isekai_kara_Oikaketekita

Reverse tropes are interesting, and this is a reverse isekai -- cute dark elf girl from a fantasy world coming into ours. These types of reverse isekai anime tend to be fun and silly, and this one looks like it will include a healthy dose of ecchi as well (very welcome). Cute girls and fun premise, curious how it will play out!

#5: Danjo no Yuujou wa Seiritsu suru? (Iya, Shinai!!)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/52709/Danjo_no_Yuujou_wa_Seiritsu_suru_Iya_Shinai

First, something about the character designs in this makes me want to laugh. As for the actual show, looks pretty interesting, love polygon stuff I'm guessing from the synopsis on MAL. I do enjoy romcom anime, and this looks like a fun one with a nice setup.
#6: Haite Kudasai, Takamine-san
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59457/Haite_Kudasai_Takamine-san

Modern ecchi anime with a ridiculous plot involving powers to redo things at the cost of stripping clothes. I like ecchi anime, including the absurd ones, and this looks pretty fun. Curious what situations will arise with the show's main mechanic. Episode duration isn't available on MAL yet, but curious if this will be more diverse full-length episodes or shorts all about the specific gimmick -- really can go either way.
#7: Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60658/Hibi_wa_Sugiredo_Meshi_Umashi

Looks like a fusion of gourmet and CGDCT, but with a university setting. Curious if the university setting will play a significant role or not, college anime can be quite interesting when done correctly, and this looks cute. As with the previous entry in this list, I just can't tell if it will be full-length episodes or shorts, but I'm curious about it either way.

#8: Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai Chiyushi, Yami Healer toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru
URL too long, breaks formatting, just look it up on MAL.

Modern fantasy anime, which I'm actually totally cool with. Looks like a significantly less "edgy" Redo Of Healer, a show which I actually liked (especially since it was basically a modern take on old pink anime, but without the actual hentai). Considering I liked the setup of that anime, this one also looks interesting, and the idea of an underground healer is a nice premise. Some cute girls in it as well.
#9: Kakushite! Makina-san!!
https://myanimelist.net/anime/58833/Kakushite_Makina-san

Not the first show to do something like this, but I ain't complaining. New robot girl ecchi anime, this time is about a sex robot, which I can only imagine will lead to a lot of lewd and humorous hi-jinks. Curious how this show will play out, I can foresee it playing around with trying to keep her functions hidden, her showing her true form (this isn't even my final form!), and various predicaments. Looks cute and silly.
#10: Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai to Konyaku Haki sareta Seijo wa Ringoku ni Urareru
URL too long, breaks formatting, just look it up on MAL.

Really interesting premise of a "too perfect" saint girl being sold off by her fiance to another kingdom. The plot synopsis really piques my interest, curious what the story itself will entail after that initial fiasco. Kind of hard to put my thoughts into words on this one, but I'm definitely looking forwards to it, looks interesting.

#11: Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59452/Katainaka_no_Ossan_Kensei_ni_Naru

Every season I seem to add a few of these modern fantasy anime to my PTW, there's just so many of them made that it's hard not to. Something about this one piqued my interest a bit, having a "past their prime" protagonist leading the party, curious how that will effect things and the story.

#12: Kijin Gentoushou
https://myanimelist.net/anime/49778/Kijin_Gentoushou

Something about this one reminds me of older demon-themed anime, so that drew me in right away. Also add bandaged eye loli to the mix and I'm sold. The anime doesn't have the drama tag on MAL, but just from the look of it and the synopsis, I expect some nice drama mixed with the action and adventure stuff. Curious looking show though, wonder how it will feel.

#13: Kowloon Generic Romance
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60083/Kowloon_Generic_Romance

I love anime with unique settings, and Kowloon most certainly fits the bill. I highly suggest doing some research on Kowloon (the walled city), it's fascinating and really bizarre, is really cool seeing an anime themed around it. Really curious how the setting will apply to the characters, and what it will actually look like animated. Show itself looks like a romcom, which I do enjoy, and the idea of a normal story in such a unique setting piques my interest.
#14: Lazarus
https://myanimelist.net/anime/56038/Lazarus

There's like two seemingly COVID-vaccine inspired anime coming out this upcoming season, and Lazarus is one of the two, and is also the anime from the upcoming season that I've seen people talk about the most. Pandemic horror was a cool thing before the actual pandemic, so I'm curious how this will play out, and is certainly interesting we're getting two anime like this next season.

#15: Maebashi Witches
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59744/Maebashi_Witches

Cute and fun looking anime, wonder if it will be a new long shoujo anime, I love those and would definitely be down for more of those being made. Whatever this show may be, I'm quite curious about it, reminds me of other anime I really enjoy so I'm quite curious about this one. Hoping it's one of those anime with tons of episodes, but a normal sized season would be good too.

#16: Mono
https://myanimelist.net/anime/58492/Mono

Haha the audio better be in mono, haha if there's a sequel it better be called stereo, haha. Jokes aside, this one is another standout for me from the upcoming season. I actually quite enjoy photography and obscure cameras, like I own an early digital camera that uses floppy disks and it's stellar af. This looks like a very enjoyable CGDCT anime with a fun theme, curious what will be displayed here. Also, quite like tho logo, branding, and overall look of this anime.

#17: Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60377/Nazotoki_wa_Dinner_no_Ato_de

When handled well, detective anime can be amazing. I love a good mystery and seeing the characters collect clues and deduce things like motives, suspects, and so on. Happy to see a new detective anime being made (and yes, I know there's another detective anime coming out but it's a spin-off so won't be in this list). Happy that we're getting multiple anime of this genre, hoping they're good (one detective anime I dropped was total nonsense, hoping this isn't anything like that one).
#18: Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/58725/Ninja_to_Koroshiya_no_Futarigurashi

First, the idea of ninjas, assassins, and regular people in a comedy anime really makes me think of stuff like Kill Me Baby -- which is a must-watch masterpiece for all comedy anime fans. That said, this show's premise looks unique from that classic, with its own distinct personality and plot. Really fun looking anime, looks quite enjoyable and silly.

#19: Ore wa Seikan Kokka no Akutoku Ryoushu!
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60154/Ore_wa_Seikan_Kokka_no_Akutoku_Ryoushu

SF isekai? That alone makes this interesting, though I am a bit worried about those mechs in the images (always been very picky about mech stuff), curious looking show nonetheless. Protagonist at the lead of a galactic kingdom trying to do evil but having it constantly backfire is a fun premise, curious how this will play out, and again, having a sci-fi isekai is cool.

#20: Princession Orchestra
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59078/Princession_Orchestra

Everything I said about Maebashi Witches also applies here as both anime look incredibly similar. Hoping for an entertaining long shoujo anime, it certainly has that colorful and distinct look to it. Really happy to see more anime like this being produced, excited to watch it~!

#21: Rock wa Lady no Tashinami deshite
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59360/Rock_wa_Lady_no_Tashinami_deshite

One of the upcoming standouts for me personally, really excited about this one. Girls in a prestigious academy playing hard rock music and rebelling -- it's just so cool, really love the theme and really looking forwards to this one. I expect a lot of clashing, great music, and a punk spirit. Looks awesome, and girl band anime are cool (hence my obsession with K-On!). Have high hopes for this one.

#22: Shiunji-ke no Kodomotachi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/58131/Shiunji-ke_no_Kodomotachi

Romcom love polygon possible harem anime? Cute characters, fun plot setup, nice bright aesthetic, looks like an enjoyable watch. Pretty diverse looking cast (from what I can tell). Something about this one just looks very fun, and like a 2020s spin on an early 2010s set of tropes, which is definitely cool.

#23: Summer Pockets
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50694/Summer_Pockets

Another potential banger and one I'm quite looking forwards to, really reminds me of all of those VN adaptations the industry used to produce. Nice looking cast, beautiful artwork, and very cool setting (a small island with only 2000+/- inhabitants). I love stuff like this, and although I do think it should've aired in the Summer considering the title and summer theme, Spring is close enough, a wonderful looking anime for sunny days.

#24: Uchuujin MuuMuu
https://myanimelist.net/anime/60401/Uchuujin_MuuMuu

Comedy anime with a cool art-style and an alien cat? Looks fun, so sign me up. Really curious how it will be with the whole appliance theme, can't even begin to imagine what kind of jokes this show will have trying to fuse together alien cats with random household appliances, but it certainly sounds interesting, so will check it out~!

#25: Witch Watch
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59597/Witch_Watch

First, a witch/mage girl with a human familiar makes me immediately think of Zero no Tsukaima, the show itself looks different though, but interesting to see that same idea repeat so many years later. Anyways, pretty fun looking anime with a nice looking cast. Curious how it will differentiate it from the human familiar anime that came before it.

#26: Your Forma
https://myanimelist.net/anime/55995/Your_Forma

The other seemingly COVID-vaccine inspired anime, and this one, to me at least, looks a bit more interesting than Lazarus (though I do want to watch both of them). Interesting to see recent events seemingly inspire new stories, curious how it will play out, and with both of these, really hoping they're better than Western COVID-inspired media.

#27: Zatsu Tabi: That's Journey
https://myanimelist.net/anime/55514/Zatsu_Tabi__Thats_Journey

Another upcoming anime that I'm really looking forwards to, absolutely love the modern adventure theme of a girl exploring and meeting people and seeing various sights. Ever since I was a kid I loved the idea of just setting off for adventure (mostly Pokemon inspired fantasies), and I have done some "walking missions" before around San Francisco. Anyways, very interesting looking anime, really excited about it~!

#28: Virgin Punk
https://myanimelist.net/anime/59848/Virgin_Punk

Last but not least, one of my most anticipated for the upcoming season. I absolutely loved A Kite and consider it a must watch, so more of that is insanely exciting to see. Although I predict it might not be as brutal (or as pornographic), I'm still really excited to see it, really curious about this and love to see 90s style anime being made in the current era.
